Why iPhone Events Are Saved to the Wrong Calendar—and How to Fix It

iPhone events usually end up in the wrong calendar because the default calendar or the event's selected Calendar field points to a different account. Check where a sample event was saved, change the default for future appointments, and review existing events separately.

Identify one affected event

Open the appointment in Apple Calendar and inspect its Calendar field. Then open the calendar list to see which account contains that calendar.

A name like Personal or Calendar can appear more than once. Look at the account heading, not just the color or label. Check the provider's web calendar if you need confirmation.

An event entered on an iPhone can belong to Google or Exchange. Find the service behind the Apple Calendar entry before changing account connections.

Do this before deleting and reconnecting accounts. A healthy appointment stored in the wrong account needs a different fix from a failed sync.

Set the default for new events

On iOS 18 and later, open Settings → Apps → Calendar → Default Calendar. Choose the calendar that should receive your usual new appointments. On older versions, Calendar appears directly in Settings.

If most new events are personal, choose the personal calendar you intend to keep. You can still select a work or shared calendar for a particular appointment when needed.

Apple explains checking the default calendar as part of its iCloud calendar troubleshooting guidance. Changing that default does not move old events into the newly chosen account.

Check the Calendar field on important appointments even after setting the default. Events created from links, email suggestions, or another app can present their own calendar choices.

Move existing events carefully

For an appointment you own and can move, open it and change its Calendar selection to the intended calendar. On some versions you first enter the event's edit screen.

Apple's multiple-calendar guide describes moving an event between calendars.

Move one test event first. Confirm it appears in the destination provider's calendar and no longer remains as a separate original in the wrong place. For a recurring series, read the prompt about moving one occurrence or the series.

Moving an invited meeting does not make you its organizer, and later updates may still reach the original account. Leave the invitation in the calendar that received it unless the provider supports the move you need. Ask the organizer to invite the correct account for future meetings.

Review personal information saved at work

If a personal appointment went into a work calendar, changing its title or marking it private may hide details from people who view it later. It cannot undo what someone has already seen.

Move or remove the item as appropriate, check invitations and copies, and follow any relevant workplace process if sensitive information was involved. Do not assume changing the default calendar erases the earlier entry.

For future personal appointments, put only a generic busy block without personal notes in work. Keep the detailed appointment in the personal calendar you chose.

If the event belongs to another app's account

Google and Microsoft calendars can both appear in Apple Calendar. You do not need to move their events to iCloud to use them on an iPhone.

Decide where the event should live based on ownership, collaboration and access. A class calendar maintained by a university should normally remain at its source; your task may be displaying or copying it, rather than taking over its events.

For many affected appointments, review a small sample first and keep a backup before a large migration. A Mac may offer a more practical review screen than moving a long history one event at a time on a phone.

How this affects Avum

Avum reads the calendars connected to it. If an event was saved to a different account, a rule watching the intended iCloud calendar cannot copy an appointment that is not there.

Connect the actual source or move the event to the intended calendar, then review the Sync Rule. Avum Calendar can help you recognize connected sources, but it cannot infer that an event saved elsewhere was meant for iCloud.

Finally, create a new sample on the iPhone, inspect its Calendar field, and confirm it in the provider's web view. Remove it after checking the destination.
