How to Sync Only Events During Working Hours

You may want personal appointments to block your work calendar without copying every dinner or weekend plan. A working-hours rule sounds simple, but two questions matter: which time zone defines “working,” and what should happen when an event crosses the edge of the window?

For a small number of appointments, manually creating neutral busy blocks can be the clearest answer. For regular changes, a selective rule can reduce the work, provided its boundary behavior matches your needs.

Working hours versus which events copy

A provider's working-hours setting tells people when you generally work. It does not select the events an independent sync rule copies. Google's working-hours settings cover the native availability feature and its account requirements.

Decide what should happen at the edge of your workday. Should an 08:30–09:30 appointment create only a 09:00–09:30 block? Should an all-day absence remain all day? Would an overnight event need separate daily blocks? Answer those questions before choosing the filter settings.

If you only need a few exceptions, enter the desired work blocks manually. It takes little setup and gives you exact control. Keep the original personal event intact so its real duration remains clear.

The time zone that defines the window

For a fixed office schedule, use that office's named zone, such as Europe/Budapest, rather than a permanent numeric offset. Daylight-saving changes make a fixed offset a poor substitute for a place-based schedule.

Use the source event's own time zone only if the window should follow each event's local clock. For example, a rule applied to appointments in different cities can then use different local hours. A fixed office schedule usually needs one selected office zone instead.

For recurring appointments, account for daylight saving time changes: the same local hour does not always have the same UTC offset.

Set up the filter in Avum

Create or edit the relevant Sync Rule, confirm its source and destination, then review its filters. Select the intended weekdays, enable Specific Hours, and enter the start and end. Choose the filter's time zone mode and, for a selected zone, confirm the named zone.

Enter a daily start earlier than the end. The single window does not represent an overnight “17:00 to 09:00” schedule. For a more complicated work pattern, use explicit source blocks, separate rules where they fit, or manual busy appointments.

These built-in filters do not require writing JavaScript. Plus and Premium add advanced conditional settings and scripting. Check the current plan details for account, rule and advanced-feature limits before designing a large setup.

Trimming, all-day events, and recurring series

For an ordinary timed event, the rule can skip an event outside the allowed window or trim its copied start/end to the allowed boundaries. With a 09:00–17:00 window, an ordinary 08:30–09:30 appointment can therefore become a 09:00–09:30 destination copy. The original event remains the source of the full appointment.

There are important limits. Specific Hours does not trim all-day events. A long event is not split into a collection of separate daily work blocks; a multi-day copy can still include the off-hours between its first and last allowed periods. Some complex recurring series are copied at their full length instead of being trimmed. Do not use the filter as a promise that every possible series will be perfectly clipped to office hours.

Test the edges before enabling a broad rule

Use non-sensitive test events: one inside the window, one outside, one crossing the start, one crossing the end and one all-day entry. Include a recurring example matching your real schedule. Inspect the saved rule and the resulting destination events, then check a date around a daylight-saving change.

If a long or recurring pattern does not produce the intended blocks, use explicit source events or a narrower arrangement. Testing calendar synchronization provides a broader checklist. Also review busy-only copying so the selected events carry appropriate detail into work.
