Can a Cloud Sync Service Reach Your Self-Hosted Calendar?

A cloud sync service needs an approved route to your self-hosted calendar from outside your home or office network. Your laptop reaching the calendar over local Wi-Fi does not give the cloud service the same access. Ask the server administrator whether external CalDAV connections are supported before changing networking.

Local apps and hosted connections

For appointments on your own devices, connect CalDAV directly on iPhone or Mac, or through an Android sync adapter such as DAVx⁵. This keeps the original calendar on your server.

For classic Outlook on a computer that can reach the server, a compatible local CalDAV add-in may be suitable. A private network or approved VPN can make the server accessible to that device without offering the same path to an unrelated cloud service.

The limitation is that a local connection only works when its device and required network access are available. That may be acceptable for a personal calendar app, but less suitable for a workflow expected to maintain work copies continuously.

Check the address from outside the local network

A calendar URL containing a local-only name or private network address is a clue. A cloud service cannot ordinarily reach a server just because your phone can reach it over home Wi-Fi.

Ask the administrator these practical questions:

  • Is this calendar intended to accept external CalDAV clients?
  • What is the supported external server address?
  • Does the service require a VPN, client certificate, or another access gateway?
  • Can a hosted connector use that authentication method?
  • Is the particular account allowed to access the relevant calendar?

Browser sign-in alone does not answer these questions. An interactive security gateway may work for a person but not support the calendar software's connection method.

Use the provider's connection and security instructions

Check the installation's own documentation before changing networking. Nextcloud, for example, publishes macOS calendar setup guidance and device-password guidance. The correct address depends on the installation.

Use a valid HTTPS connection and the supported account credential. If an app reports a certificate problem, ask the administrator to correct the certificate or supply the approved setup. Disabling certificate checks is not a general solution.

If a separate device password is available, use a named one so access can be revoked without disrupting every device. Provide the connector only the access it needs. For a source used solely to read appointments, check whether the server can issue a read-only credential or share.

A CalDAV source for work-calendar copies

For a private CalDAV calendar feeding a work account in Avum, the CalDAV host must accept the service's connection. A private network, interactive gateway, or unsupported authentication method can block that route.

To evaluate it, connect the account using the administrator's documented details. Check that the intended calendars appear and that a Sync Rule can read the source. If the CalDAV calendar will receive copies, verify write permission separately.

Create an appointment without guests. Confirm the original on the server, its destination copy, and a subsequent time change. If hosted operation is the reason for the connection, turn off your computer and check that a later source update still arrives.

Do not expose a previously private server just to satisfy a setup form. If there is no approved hosted access route, use a local client, an approved read-only ICS feed, or manually maintain the small number of busy blocks you need in the other account.

A published feed also has privacy implications. A private-looking URL can still provide calendar access to anyone who obtains it. Treat it as account information, not something to paste into a public troubleshooting thread.

Connection errors worth recording

Record whether the failure happens at sign-in, calendar discovery, reading, or saving. Work through CalDAV connection errors at that step and give the administrator the error message with private details removed.
